How Zodiac Compatibility Is Actually Calculated
Most simple compatibility tools boil a relationship down to a single percentage, but the underlying logic astrologers actually use is built around a much smaller and more interesting idea: the four elements.
The four elements
Each of the 12 zodiac signs belongs to one of four elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), or Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). This grouping is the foundation almost all sun-sign compatibility reasoning is built on.
Which elements traditionally pair well
Fire and Air are considered a natural match — Air feeds Fire, much like wind feeds flame, and both elements tend to be more outgoing and spontaneous. Earth and Water are the other classic pairing — Water nourishes Earth, and both tend to value stability and depth over spontaneity.
Same-element pairings (two Fire signs, two Water signs) are often considered highly compatible too, since they share a fundamental temperament, though this can also mean shared weaknesses rather than balance.
- Fire + Air — energetic, expressive, generally considered a strong match
- Earth + Water — grounded, emotionally deep, generally considered a strong match
- Same element + same element — high natural understanding, but can amplify flaws too
- Fire + Earth or Air + Water — more challenging, often described as needing more deliberate effort
Why it's more nuanced in practice
Real astrological compatibility work also considers your moon sign, rising sign, and the specific degree relationships between two full birth charts — sun-sign-only compatibility is a simplified, entertainment-oriented version of a much deeper practice. It's best treated as a fun starting point rather than a definitive verdict on a relationship.
